Bevyxxa helps prevent blood clots in adults who are in the hospital and are at risk of getting blood clots. Since it helps to prevent blood clots, this medication can cause bleeding problems.
Bevyxxa Overview
Bevyxxa is a prescription medication used to prevent blood clots from forming. Bevyxxa belongs to a group of drugs called factor Xa inhibitors. These work to block a substance that helps with the formation of blood clots.
Bevyxxa comes as a capsule and is taken 1 time a day with food. Bevyxxa should be taken at the same time every day.
Common side effects of Bevyxxa are related to bleeding.

Bevyxxa Interactions
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take:
- medications that block the p-glycoprotein transporter such as amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), azithromycin (Zithromax, Zmax), captopril (Capoten), carvedilol (Coreg), clarithromycin (Biaxin), conivaptan (Vaprisol), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf), diltiazem (Cardizem), dronedarone (Multaq), erythromycin (EES, Ery-Tab), felodipine (Plendil), itraconazole (Sporanox, Onmel), ketoconazole (Nizoral), lopinavir and ritonavir (Kaletra), quinidine (Cardioquine, Quinact, Duraquin), ranolazine (Ranexa), verapamil (Calan, Isoptin, Covera, Verelan)
- antiplatelets (a type of blood thinner) such as clopidogrel (Plavix), aspirin, prasugrel (Effient), ticagrelor (Brilinta), ticlopidine (Ticlid), abciximab (ReoPro), eptifibatide (Integrilin), tirofiban (Aggrastat), and cilostazol (Pletal)
- anticoagulant (blood thinner) medications such as warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven), heparin, enoxaparin (Lovenox), fondaparinux (Arixtra), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and apixaban (Eliquis)

Bevyxxa Precautions
Serious side effects have been reported with Bevyxxa including the following:
Risk of Bleeding. Increased risk of bleeding can cause serious and potentially fatal bleeding. Watch for signs and symptoms of blood loss and contact doctor if bleeding persists.
Some situations can increase the risk of bleeding:
- Certain medications such as P-gp Inhibitors (see drug interaction section) can increase the risk of bleeding. Bevyxxa treatment may need to be given at lower doses or stopped completely.
- Kidney Impairment (when your kidney does not work as well as it should). In these cases, the dose of Bevyxxa may be needed.
Risk of blood pooling when spinal/epidural anesthesia or puncture is done. Monitor for signs of neurological changes numbness such as weakness in legs and/or bladder dysfunction.
Do not take Bevyxxa if you:
- are allergic to Bevyxxa or to any of its ingredients
- have active pathological bleeding
Bevyxxa Food Interactions
Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Bevyxxa, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving Bevyxxa.
Inform MD
Before taking Bevyxxa, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:
- are allergic to Bevyxxa or to any of its ingredients
- have an artificial heart valve
- have liver problems
- have kidney problems
- have or have had a bleeding disorder
- are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
- are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
- have any surgery, including dental surgery, while taking Bevyxxa
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Bevyxxa and Pregnancy
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.
There are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. However, in animal studies, when pregnant animals were given Bevyxxa, the babies were not born with developmental problems, but mothers were at increased risk for bleeding problems. Therefore, Bevyxxa should be used on if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the mother and baby.
Bevyxxa and Lactation
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.
It is not known if Bevyxxa crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Bevyxxa.
Bevyxxa Usage
Take Bevyxxa exactly as prescribed.
Bevyxxa comes as a capsule and is taken 1 time a day with food. Bevyxxa should be taken at the same time every day.
If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Bevyxxa at the same time.
Bevyxxa Dosage
Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.
The recommended dose of Bevyxxa is 160 mg 1 time per day initially, followed by 80 mg 1 time per day. The recommended total treatment time is 35-42 days. Bevyxxa should be taken at the same every day with food.
Bevyxxa Overdose
If you take too much Bevyxxa, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.
Other Requirements
Store Bevyxxa at room temperature. Keep Bevyxxa and all medications out of the reach of children.
Bevyxxa FDA Warning
WARNING: SPINAL/EPIDURAL HEMATOMA
Blood pooling in the spine may occur in patients treated with Bevyxxa who are receiving specific anesthesia or undergoing spinal puncture. The risk of these events may be increased by the use of catheters or the use of other medications that effect the blood. These pools of blood may result in long-term or permanent paralysis. Consider these risks when scheduling patients for spinal procedures.
