Things You Can Do Today to Feel Better Tomorrow

Giving Back Goes a Long Way

Several studies have shown that one’s generosity usually is rewarded by others down the road, so keep the good deeds going and pay it forward! Whether you donate money to a charity, volunteer your time or simply lend a helping hand, the act of giving can release chemicals in the brain called endorphins, which contribute to a good mood and positive feeling known as the “helper’s high.” Oxytocin is another hormone that is released and induces the feelings of euphoria, warmth and a connection to others. If you want to give, you can choose from thousands of charities that offer support to those with life-threatening conditions. The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation is a charity that promotes AIDS research and prevention of HIV infection in children. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society sponsors events such as Walk MS, where you can either participate in the walk or donate to someone walking for multiple sclerosis. If you can’t donate money, you can help in other ways. Soup kitchens and homeless shelters are always in need of volunteers.
